Supportive Tools and Devices for Living Well with Epilepsy

Assistive devices can significantly enhance quality of life, reduce stress, and help individuals living with epilepsy gain better control over their condition. But do you know what kinds of tools and aids are available to support people with epilepsy?

A wide range of devices can help both patients and their caregivers manage daily routines more safely and comfortably. These include:

  • Medical ID bracelets – Wristbands containing essential information about the condition and emergency contacts.
  • Seizure tracking apps – Apps designed to record and monitor seizure activity. One Czech-language option is Helpilepsy, available for Android and iOS.
  • Seizure monitoring devices – A variety of wearable wristbands and bed sensors are designed to detect and alert caregivers of specific seizure types. These must be purchased privately and are not currently covered by insurance.

We strongly recommend discussing any potential purchase of assistive devices with your neurologist to determine which tools are best suited to your specific type of epilepsy.

  • Assistance and signal dogs – Specially trained dogs that can help during or after seizures, or alert caregivers when needed.
  • Mobility aids – Prescribed by a physician when necessary to support movement and reduce injury risk.
  • Protective helmets – May be prescribed to patients with frequent drop seizures or at high risk of falls.
  • Incontinence supplies – Available by prescription when relevant for seizure management.
  • and more
