Assessment of International Patients

The Brno Epilepsy Center has been offering highly specialized care, including advanced epilepsy surgery, to patients from across the European Union – primarily from Slovakia – since 2002.

The number of international patients treated at the Epilepsy Center Brno continues to grow steadily. Each year, several dozen patients from abroad are consulted at our Center, and approximately ten international patients undergo epilepsy surgery annually.

We are able to provide care for self-paying patients and, in certain cases, based on approval, also under agreements for highly specialized care covered by foreign health insurance providers.

Approval Process for Insurance Coverage for Patients from Slovakia

Each case is assessed individually, and the process is initiated by a request from the patient’s treating physician in Slovakia for the approval of highly specialized care in the Czech Republic. The treating physician submits an application to the Slovak health insurance company (using the European S2 form for planned healthcare abroad), accompanied by a brief medical report justifying the need for treatment in the Czech Republic.

As part of the application, financial estimates for the proposed treatment in the Czech Republic must be submitted. These documents provide indicative cost estimates and can be downloaded at the bottom of this page.

The treating physician should submit all provided cost options, as it is not possible to determine in advance which treatment pathway will be optimal for the patient.

Practical Steps for the Assessment of International Patients

  1. The international neurologist consults the patient’s case with one of the physicians from the Epilepsy Center Brno (emails and phone numbers are available in the “Contacts” section).
  2. The request is submitted to the health insurance company.
  3. Upon insurance approval, the patient is scheduled for diagnostic hospitalization through the physicians of the Epilepsy Center Brno, either at the Epileptology Department of St. Anne’s University Hospital Brno (adults) or at the Department of Pediatric Neurology at University Hospital Brno (children).
  4. Further steps, including investigations and potential surgery, are coordinated individually based on the diagnostic results by the assigned physician from the Epilepsy Center Brno.
